Based on the 1988 movie by mellowing shock-meister John Waters, the stage musical Hairspray opened on Broadway in July 2002 and ran for a fabulous 6 ½ years; along the way inspiring a new film staring John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Zac Efron, which grossed over $16.6 million at the Australian box office upon its 2007 release.

With its finger-popping blend of hot 1960s-style dance music and cool rhythm and blues, the inspiring story of Tracy Turnblad - a plus-sized girl who just wants to dance, and who breaks down segregation on her favourite TV show by doing so - set audiences' and critics' hearts alight on both sides of the Atlantic. If there were awards to be won, they went to Hairspray: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best New Musical, Best Newcomer, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Lyrics, the list goes on and on.

Now the international musical theatre phenomenon comes to Sydney, with a brand new production of Hairspray opening at the Lyric Theatre.

“Australians will simply fall in love with this joyous musical,” said co-producer Paul Dainty. “Hairspray will be twice the size of our current production of Jersey Boys and it will no doubt be the most elaborate and expensive musical staged in Austalia.”
