Melbourne's worst-kept secret is that if you want to discover the real Melbourne, you have to scratch the surface and dig a little to find the real gems, whether they be the funky laneway bars, the cool shops, the best street art and music or the best coffee. It's the kind of stuff you're not going to see on travelogue shows on TV or in tourist brochures.

But worry not, because We Make Stuff Good, a collection of artists, musicians, writers and designers have started conducting tours of Melbourne's CBD that take you off the beaten track, and away from the tourist traps, into the laneways and alleys where subculture is really happening.

You'll get to see street art, browse in some hip shops, have a drink or two in some happening bars - and learn why Melbourne's art and culture is world-class and beats Sydney hands-down! You'll also get fed at Shanghai Dumpling House in Tattersalls Lane, one of Melbourne's best 'hidden secret' restaurants.

There are two tours: the Graffiti Art and Street Culture Tour from 3pm to 7.30pm, which includes store discounts, a Metcard and dinner; and the Bar Tour, from 7.30pm to midnight, which gets you free entry to the venues and four free drinks. Or you can do both for the full experience.

Just when you thought you knew Melbourne, here's another facet of the city revealed.

Sam, you simply could have said that you do not like graffiti art. Art, like fashion, is subjective. Each person has their own tastes. Melbourne rules!

I'm doing a project on graffiti and can't believe the amazing stuff that's out there! These artists are very talented and I now have a new found admiration for their art. Are their any women who do graffiti!
