Betwixt and between the business of life, we all need a little otherworldly magic. For the most part, we can continue to be upright. But, for four freakish weeks a year, we can sneak into a supernatural sideshow.

For the past decade, a neat acre or two of Rundle Park has grown into an improbable wilderness. Here, contortionists and painted ladies are the norm. You're just as likely to encounter a puppet as a person and the dress code is as flexible as the legs of the man on the high wire.

Festival goers can simply stroll or chose from over one thousand ticketed events. These range from the fantastical to the out-and-out funny. A giggle is guaranteed this year from earth-angel Fiona O'Loughlin. Until February 28, she soars with new show On A Wing and a Prayer. Expect the sweetest kind of sacrilege.

Until the small hours throughout the Garden, you can step outside the everyday. Even the food here is atypical for a carnival. Which is to say: you don't actually have to eat a Dagwood Dog.

Slap on the pancake, some sequins or just a sense of adventure to explore the great, overgrown garden that has become the symbol of the Fringe.
