Freaky Tiki may be a more gay-friendly name than the former Newtown Hotel, but strangely the gay guys and gals have more or less moved out, taking the drag queens with them. No one can blame Freaky Tiki for not trying. The decor is quirky in the extreme, with a faux Hawaiian theme and faux grass to boot, as well as actively encouraged wall scribbles like a toilet block. The food's pretty yummy, as are the fabulous if pricey cocktails. Promotional material certainly hints that it won’t last in this incarnation, with the tagline 'limited time only'. It's all very tongue-in-cheek and may well grow into its plastic fantastic look.
