Flaming Lips Take Another Hit
Editorial
Three years since At War With the Mystics, The Flaming Lips have announced a release date and title for the upcoming LP. According to the band, the new album is called Embryonic and will be released in September. Speaking with the BBC last year, frontman, Wayne Coyne, said the new album would sound, "something like if John Lennon got together with Miles Davis and they discovered computers". He then back paddled a bit, adding, "I'd never want to make it sound like Imagine, but some of these songs accidentally fall into that category ... " There's been no word on the album's sound or direction since then, so we can only assume it's still Miles and Lennon.
If you're not up on the whole Flaming Lips saga, here's a refresher: The Oklahoma band recorded several albums and EPs in the '80s before finally getting some recognition with 1993's She Don't Use Jelly. While that was a minor radio hit, it was the psychedelic adventures they undertook with 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War With the Mystics that solidified their reputation. The group were nominated for a BRIT Award in 2007 for At War With the Mystics and have collected three Grammy Awards to date. They've also been more popular out this way (and the UK) then in their native US, so expect a tour to accompany the release.
