Euchronia
Editorial
Steampunk seems to be making a comeback. While the combination of science fiction, computers and Victorian-era England rose to prominence in early '90s literary circles, it soon fell of the landscape. Until now, that is. Euchronia are bringing in the New Year with a Steampunk/neo Victorian ball. The venue features three separate spaces dedicated to different times, themes and music. The New Ballroom features a mix of new romantic, gothic fusion and industrial. The Bella Union Bar hosts several live cabaret-style acts as well as DJs. Finally, there's the Annex for taking in a more laid-back and relaxed vibe.
So what about the acts? Well there's a mix of live music and DJs. Sforzando, for instance, are a seven-piece pirate orchestra that blend "ferocious punk, Western European folk melodies and classic sea shanties to create a soundscape for the ocean. They sing of sailors that can't swim, ships that won't sail, dangerous mermaids and sirens ravishing the waves?" That's how they describe it, anyway.
As for The Tenth Stage, they play alternative goth rock with a splash of folk. All of which sounds suspiciously like Depeche Mode. In any case, they've released several albums, have remixed acts like The Human League and are crazy popular in places like Russia and Eastern Europe. So if you're looking to bring in the New Year with some gothic, alternative ambience, Euchronia fits the bill nicely.
