Eminem, Tori Amos Give Music Away
Editorial
While Facebook has long replaced MySpace as everyones's preferred social networking site, MySpace is still the musician's choice. Indeed, several high-profile acts are streaming their new albums via MySpace and allowing fans to hear the tracks before they buy them. The most high profile release to make its way onto the web this week is Eminem's Relapse - his first studio album in five years. You can head over to his Myspace page right now and hear the entire album, including that line about Mariah Carey that made her husband want to fight rapper.
Other acts to give their albums the web streaming treatment include Tori Amos, Busta Rhymes, Phoenix, Method Man and Redman, and Lionel Richie. Given the public's thirsty for all things free and illegally downloaded, this move towards MySpace streaming is designed to give fans a legal sample of the album and (hopefully) convince them to part with the bucks.
That said, most musicians these days make the bulk of their income from touring and merchandise - not the pocket change major record labels throw at them. You can expect to see (and hear) more acts following suit throughout 2009.
