Das Racist tour
Editorial
Supreme joke or brilliant new voice in hip-hop? Your personal take on Das Racist is as likely to swing towards one extreme as the other, but it doesn’t diminish either the Brooklyn group’s loopy DIY sound or the unlikely sophistication of their rhymes and references.
An album that features production from members of Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend and name-checks Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Magnum may sound on paper like the stuff of painful indie farce, but in reality it’s exceptionally well done and seemingly sincere. It’s also very much a product of our times: nostalgic, pop-culture-saturated, tongue-in-cheek and drowning in both hype and hate.
