Unstuck and untroubled by what the neighbours, or, for that matter, anyone might think of her, Deveny commands a passionate audience with her weekly pieces in Melbourne newspaper The Age.

Of late, as readers will know, the lapsed Catholic has run away from Mother Church at speed and chosen to worship at the feet of Richard Dawkins instead. It is this newfound atheist zeal that informs her stand-up show.

With a growing profile, the godless gag-meister may have had a chance to make the transition from the page to the stage. Let's hope so. If you're poking fun at an old dude in the sky, you'd better be funny about it.
