Carters Public House
Editorial
High Street Northcote is fast becoming one of the hippest strips in Melbourne. Gone are the days when Northcote residents had to head to Fitzroy for imbibing, in fact, the reason why you can never get a park around here of a Friday evening is because of the amount of ‘tourists’ who know this is now the spot to be. For some residents this frenzy over the new look High street has been a blast, but for others who really don’t want to have to worry if their jeans are skinny enough or their knowledge of obscure bands is hip enough, then a no attitude watering hole such as Carters is a haven.
This cozy little bar is right in the centre of the action. Some of you may remember her as The Salty Dog, however a makeover also called for a new name. The owners decided to pay homage to history and chose the name after a 100 year old pub that once stood where Northcote Central Shopping Centre now stands. There’s exposed brick walls, a mosaic bar and small round high top tables. The courtyard is simple, neat and comfortable.
Thursdays see $4 Carlton Draught schooners and $5 glasses of wine and champagne. Or for the grand sum of $10 you can get Carters classic burger and fries and a pot of Carlton Draught, and Sunday sessions often include live music.
