Buddy Holly & The Crickets: The Very Best of
Editorial
Did you know the theme to that English police drama Heartbeat was by Buddy Holly and the Crickets? Well, perhaps you did and perhaps you didn't. It doesn't matter. What matters is this: Buddy Holly did write the theme to Heartbeat, and it's the first track on this two-disc compilation of the best material he wrote.
Best of compilations are always risky business. Inevitably they omit much of what the real fans consider good (see any compilation of Pink Floyd material and note that it probably won't have anything from Umma Gumma or Animals). But that is not really the point of them; they're not here to appeal to the fans, but to the casual listener. And as a casual listener, if you don't enjoy listening to Buddy Holly, there's something seriously wrong with you. For those uninitiated, then it's that old vein of rock'n'roll and surf music from the days when these things mattered; when it was a statement as much as a movement - the '50s and '60s. The amazing thing about this collection is that the clarity is very much retained (it must have been remastered), but it says nothing of this process. Quite often remasters can ruin a recording, but not in this case.
Disc one contains mostly single versions (remember what a single is, folks?) while disc two is album versions and some less common tracks. If you're uninitiated, the best way to become initiated is to go out, get it and listen, listen, listen! It seems to be quite a thorough covering of the man's career, so there's not much else to say. Great stuff.
