Bravura: 21st Century Australian Craft

If you want to see what's new, what's current, what's 'now' - and what's fashionable in decorative arts, then this is the exhibition for you. And in case you're wondering, decorative arts are things like bowls, vases, wall hangings, object d'art, you get the idea.
Bravura: 21st Century Australian Craft is a new exhibition showcasing some of the best contemporary decorative arts created here in Australia. Displays of new and recent works from the Art Gallery's permanent collection, and acquisitions from the Maude Vizard-Wholohan Art prizes Purchase Awards 2009 cover ceramics, glass, metalware, jewellery, textiles and furniture from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian artists.
The exhibition is a chance to review and reflect on our artists' relationship to craft, and how we as a culture engage with the notion of place. That may sound slightly esoteric, but it's a very telling and revealing demonstration on how artists create and what inspires them. With 58 artists and craft practitioners and 78 artworks, this is an important exhibition of current Australian art. Artists on display include Alison Carroll, Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Julie Blyfield, Khai Liew, Jeff Mincham, Kantjupanyi Benson, Vito Bila, Jennifer Robertson, Giles Bettison, Stephen Benwell, Lola Greeno, Marian Hosking and Kirsten Coelho.
