Just so we're clear: this is pole dancing with an actual pole; not a celebration of eastern European folk dance. But, it is not the sort of strip-club shimmying that causes us to wonder whose job it is to Ajax the pole, either. In fact, hygienic wipes are rarely needed in this exhibition of an art form that, so we're told, is rapidly gaining respectability.
Although pole dancing retains its Hen's Night allure, the "sensual" form of the dance is receding to embrace acrobatics that are more reminiscent of Cirque de Soleil than they are of Carmen Electra's pink bits. If you thought it was all bump, grind and grunt, then, clearly, you've never seen work on the Chinese pole.

An aerobically and artistically demanding performance has now grown to attract a good number of men to the form. Blokes from Thailand, Singapore and Japan will join beefy Australasians for a spin.
While casual aficionados of the pole can enjoy watching the perfectly formed finalists do their thing, the industry sets about its work. For the latest in pole technology - yes, we can build a better pole - this expo is, unsurprisingly, the only place to shop.
Seriously. If you have a spare seventy bucks, a smile and a taste for Pac-Rim couples entwined in free-style calisthenics, you probably oughtn't miss this peculiar event.

Hmm, maybe I should apply to compete - I was in a Pole Man competition a few years back, and on my last trip to Thailand, I showed some of the local Lady Boys a trick or two on a pole...

More and more gyms are offering pole dancing classes as a creative way to get fit. Call yours to see if they offer one. Keeping your outside leg straight, swing it out to the side and step all the way around the pole, pivoting on your inside foot at the same time. Allow your knee to bend slightly as you turn.
