Editorial
When: 5 Dec 2009-5 Apr 2010
Where: Gallery of Modern Art
Details: Gallery of Modern Art (07) 3840-7303
This year, the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, or APT6, is not only taking over the whole of the Gallery of Modern Art, but it's spilling out into the Watermall and other galleries at the Queensland Art Gallery. In other words, it's bigger and better than ever!
The work of more than 100 artists from 25 countries feature during the exhibition, with many collaborations and collectives that reflect how diverse the Asia Pacific region is. Thematic links across the works include the dynamism of collaboration, the power of popular culture in representing different perspectives, the impact of rapid social change on smaller communities, and the practice of drawing.
Works and artists from Tibet, North Korea (DPRK), Turkey and Iran, Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma) will feature for the first time and it's not just visual art that's being showcased. Music, in particular the Pacific Reggae Project, from Hawaii, the Solomon Islands, new Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand also plays an important part in the Triennial.
There's also a major film component, with films from countries across the Indian subcontinent (Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Kashmir, Pakistan) to West Asia and the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine).
The kids aren't forgotten either. Kids' APT will present an 11-day Summer Spectacular during January 2010.
