3OH!3: Want

events|3oh!3%3A%20want
Simultaneously straddling and destroying genres, are 3OH!3 are the bastard children of a brave new world, or are they simply terrible?

Editorial

Release date: 28 March 2009 (Photo Finish)
Sweet Jebus. Stylistically you'd have to lump Want in with rap-rock, but Linkin Park are classically-trained geniuses compared to this. It's like Soulja Boy and the guys from Crazytown had babies with their sisters and then raised them in Chernobyl on a diet of thalidomide.

3OH!3's claim to be influenced by hip-hop and electronic acts is a gross insult to both genres. Their alleged 'rhyming' is all of the woefully lame park/dark/lark variety, and their lyrics are as rich and varied as "When I come up in the club/I'm talkin' mad shit and/You know I reps this shit/I gots it tatted on my skin." Even these gems are an achievement, as they generally manage to fit about four syllables into each line, making every song a slow, awkward chant.

The vocalists have two modes: 95 percent of the time it's over-hyped macho shouting; then there's the occasional lapse into cheesy nasal choruses. The exclamation mark in their name tells you all you need to know about their fondness for screaming. In terms of their music, 3OH!3's backing tracks are the most painfully simplistic collections of industrial samples you've ever heard. Three drunk macaques with sticks and a garbage can could have shown greater tonal and rhythmic mastery.

There are no words in the English language to describe how phenomenally awful this is. Worst record of 2009 without a semblance of a doubt, and we're not even halfway through.
